Ventricular septal defect

Question:
Can someone with the heart condition Ventricular Septal Defect dive safely?
Are there any precautions/special advice for someone with this condition if they can dive?

Answer:
An individual having a ventricular septal defect has to be assessed carefully by a competent cardiologist experienced in diving medicine.
It carries more or less the same risks as a PFO and may be more at risk of suffering from decompression illness.
Such an individual should avoid any manoeuvres which may reverse the left to right shunt and permit bubbles to travel to the left side of the heart such as the Valsalva.
