DAN Europe introduces its Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course

Better education makes safer divers. That is why DAN Europe have just added to its suite of training programmes a Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course.
The course is run in accordance with the specifications laid out by IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association) and designed under the IMCA accreditation scheme.

Why a DMT course
As any diver well knows, decompression accidents require immediate action and recompression. Proximity to a hyperbaric chamber and availability of a diving physician are crucial factors when it comes to properly treating an injured diver and thus avoiding bad consequences. Most of the times, however, diving physicians are far away and cannot intervene immediately. It is therefore essential the presence on-scene of a diving medic who has been specifically trained.
The DAN DMT course has just been introduced to address this specific need and complete the dive medicine chain.

What does a DMT do?
A DMT usually becomes the first response person on scene assisting the injured or unwell diver and remotely communicates with diving physicians to provide the necessary treatment until they arrive on scene. The DMT supports the hyperbaric chamber personnel with providing continued treatment under the care of a Hyperbaric Physician.

To Whom This Course is Addressed
The DMT course was originally designed for commercial divers, who are able to get a IMCA DMT certification.
However, the course was opened to those professional and recreational divers wanting to deepen their knowledge and understanding of dive medicine, in order to better help divers with their new skills and knowledge in an emergency.
The course will also be of interest to those who are already working in the industry as diving safety officers including surface support personnel at dive sites.

Prerequisites
Commercial Diver participants:

Must hold a valid medical certification (for Commercial Divers needing
IMCA DMT)
For IMCA offshore diver accreditation, in addition to the above, candidates must also hold an IMCA qualification in offshore diving (or IMCA recognised equivalent)
Should at least hold a current BLS/First Aid certification

Professional and Recreational Divers

Must be over the age of 18
Have at least the recreational diver standard of Rescue Diver
or equivalent
Should at least hold a current BLS/First Aid certification

Certification
IMCA – Certified Diver Medicial Technician – Valid for 3 Years
DAN Europe – Certified Diver Medical Technician – Valid for 3 Years

Next DMT course is 30th January to 10th February 2012, and is based in Brentford, West London (UK).

We are happy to announce that a new partnership has recently been signed between DAN Europe and the City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia. 
This includes the Oceanográfico, the largest aquarium in Europe, and a number of other interesting attractions.

The shark encounter is a new and thrilling activity proposed by the Oceanigráfico to qualified divers, who will be surrounded by 1.350 specimens of 51 different species, among which the impressive Sand Tiger Shark, Grey Reef Shark, Nurse Shark, Houndshark, Sawfish and Sunfish.
The Oceanográfico will donate 10% of the income of this activity to shark research and conservation projects.

DAN Europe, through its own International Diving Assurance Ltd. (IDA), is the official insurer of the event. Divers who are not yet DAN Europe members will be covered by a IDA short term coverage.  Also for this activity DAN Europe members will have the 10% price reduction.

Sono aperte le iscrizioni alla quarta edizione del Master Universitario di II Livello (63 CFU) in Medicina Subacquea ed Iperbarica della Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Master intitolato al suo ideatore e promotore Prof. Piergiorgio Data.
Il Master rispetta gli standard ECHM-EDTC (2011).

Le ore di impegno totale, fra lezioni teoriche, seminari, workshop e esercitazioni pratiche sono 630.

Anche alla radio: inizia oggi e andrà avanti per un intero mese “Sott'acqua”, il programma radiofonico di RTL 102.5 RGC (Radio Guardia Costiera) dedicato all'immersione subacquea in tutti i suoi aspetti, dal ludico al medico-scientifico. Renowned scientist and doctors from all over Europe will meet in Gdansk, Poland, on Sunday, August 28th, to talk about diving medicine and safety, presenting the latest advances, updates and current research.

Participation is free of charge. Since a limited number of seats are available, reservation is recommended. The official language of the conference is English, but a simultaneous translation to Polish is available on request.

DAN supports the UNESCO Regional Training Course in Underwater Archaeology

Antalya (Turkey), 6-19 June 2011

DAN Europe is proud to support UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in a Regional Training Course in Uderwater Archaeology being held in Antalya, Turkey, from 6 to 19 June 2011.

DAN is proposing to all course participants its well-tested and worldly known Oxygen Provider course, designed to train and educate divers in the techniques of using oxygen as first aid for a suspected dive injury.

This represents for DAN another opportunity to promote its culture of safety among divers through appropriate education programs and through the collaboration with important institutions.

The two-week UNESCO course aims at establishing a basic understanding of underwater archaeology among government heritage officials and archaeologists of the invited countries and at promoting the scientific standards of the 2001 Convention.

The UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001) ensures comprehensive protection of underwater cultural heritage through clear legal and operational rules, in addition to setting a scientific work methodology in its Annex. In the course of the UNESCO Regional Meeting in Istanbul which took place in October 2010, it was generally acknowledged that many of the countries of the region require reinforcement of their capacities in order to adequately protect their archaeological sites under water.

PHYPODE Project: International Recruitment Opportunities

DAN Europe announces it’s participation in the PHYPODE Marie Curie FP7-PEOPLE-2010-ITN project, a European Union funded project with the objective of advancing knowledge on the physiopathology of decompression.

The project unites academic partners, international not-for-profit associations, hyperbaric medical centres and industrial partners on an international scale to provide a collaborative training and research programme for 12 Early Stage and 2 Experienced (post-doctoral) researchers.

The Early Stage recruitment opportunities (which may lead to the obtention of a PhD) are open to students holding or expected to obtain a Master of Science level qualification in life sciences / biological sciences / engineering / medical sciences / physiology or health sciences.

The Experienced stage recruitment opportunities are open to candidates already holding a PhD in one of the aforementioned fields or having at least 4 years (full-time), equivalent research experience.

The PHYPODE project will:

Develop an educational and research framework for the cross-fertilization of currently fragmented research activities concerning the physiopathology of decompression;
Provide young researchers with the opportunity to: share research techniques and resources, benefit from the knowledge of the best international scientists in this field, take advantage of a program of research promoting strong interactions between industry, medical centres and academia, participate in international networking events concerning the domain, undertake secondments in industry/clinical and laboratory contexts;
Widen the career prospects of researchers by enabling them to embrace the entire chain of research activities; from fundamental research for pathophysiological understanding of decompression, to applied research in industry for the management of decompression.

DAN Europe Announces Partnership with Cousteau Divers

Organizations will work together on Participated Science Research Projects.

Divers Alert Network Europe (DAN Europe) is proud to announce a new partnership with Cousteau Divers. The partnership has recently been presented at the Paris dive show (January 14-17, 2011) during a joint public conference on Participated Science in diving. A preliminary agreement had already been signed last October in Formentera, Spain.

“A partnership between DAN and Cousteau Divers is a natural fit,” said Prof. Alessandro Marroni, CEO and chief medical officer of DAN Europe. “The two organizations share similar core values. DAN has a long-standing commitment to education and research. We were “pioneers” of participative science in diving. In fact, since 1994 DAN has been conducting several research projects on medicine and physiology in diving. This is why we liked the Cousteau Divers project.”

Cousteau Divers is a large program of participative science based on the creation of a network of divers. Divers and diving centres become actively involved in scientific projects to monitor and conserve the marine biodiversity all around the world. The program includes a vast participative multimedia branch, whereby divers can compare their underwater images to the Cousteau archive images, creating powerful before/after products which hold both scientific and aesthetic value. By uniting a community of divers who are concerned about the marine environment, Cousteau Divers brings the legacy of Jacques-Yves Cousteau to life, making each diver an agent of the study and conservation of the aquatic realm.

“When Captain Cousteau started his amazing research – continues Prof. Marroni - he was criticised by some academics, because he proposed a new kind of scientific communication. DAN has challenged the scuba diving community in a similar way: to achieve greater understanding on diving conditions with the help and active participation of scuba divers themselves.”

The two organisations will cooperate in Participative Science projects, where research on Diving Physiology and Diving Medicine meet study and conservation of the marine environment.

“I look forward to a continued partnership with DAN,” said Pierre-Yves Cousteau, President of Cousteau Divers. “We are both goal-oriented organisations ultimately working for a better, safer planet. It will be a pleasure working with the DAN team.”

Master Universitario di II livello in Medicina Subacquea ed Iperbarica

Consorzio Universitario di Trapani (TP) Anno accademico 2011

E’ in via di realizzazione un master universitario di Medicina Subacquea ed Iperbarica che si svolgerà fra Trapani e Favignana, coordinata dalla Società Mediterranea di Medicina dello Sport con l’imprimatur del Consorzio Universitario di Trapani (polo didattico dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo).

Il master nasce dall’esigenza di formare, nell’Italia meridionale, medici preparati su problematiche cliniche correlate a bisogni logistici. Infatti il nostro territorio nazionale, e la Sicilia in particolare, dal mare trae la sua principale economia (pesca, turismo, sport) e purtroppo le complicanze cliniche rilevate da tali percorsi sono sempre più frequenti e la necessità di potenziare i servizi di emergenza diventa quasi un’esigenza.

Da tale motivazione nasce il progetto del Master Universitario di II livello in Medicina Subacquea ed Iperbarica di Trapani, che dopo quello della Scuola “S. Anna “di Pisa, è l’unica iniziativa realizzata in Italia in tale direzione.

TUTELIAMO IL DIRITTO ALL’ATTIVITA’ SUBACQUEA

Tuteliamo il diritto all'attivita' subacquea

Una nuova realtà per la tutela della subacquea

E’ nata la “Consulta delle didattiche subacquee”.

Da quando in Italia la didattica subacquea ha iniziato ad offrire più opportunità, si è sempre cercato di trovare un comune denominatore che potesse rappresentare e sostenere la subacquea davanti al mondo esterno ad essa. Sono passati quasi quarant’anni e periodicamente ci si ritrovava a proporre varie soluzioni e differenti accordi ma, finora, tutto è finito in una bolla.

Il primo segnale positivo si vide nel 2008 quando si dovette discutere la nuova proposta di legge sulla subacquea. Fu quella la prima occasione dove le più importanti didattiche che operano in Italia, riuscirono ad essere coese e determinate. Il risultato fu la partecipazione ai lavori della commissione parlamentare sulla stesura definitiva della legge (purtroppo ancora ferma in commissione bilancio) ma, cosa ancora più importante, questo fu l’input che creò la consapevolezza delle potenzialità che una rappresentatività significativa poteva esprimere e che solo uniti saremmo riusciti a rivestire un importante ruolo nelle decisioni riguardanti la subacquea.

Come si sa, sono gli uomini che creano le situazioni e, per un’alchimia fortunata, tra gli uomini che si sono incontrati in questa esperienza, è nato un feeling, dovuto al rispetto reciproco e alla correttezza. Questi uomini hanno capito che si poteva lavorare insieme pur nella diversità delle proprie realtà e così, supportati ognuno dalle proprie organizzazioni, il 21 Settembre di quest’anno ADISUB, ASSOSUB, CIAS e FIPSAS, quattro sigle che racchiudono il 90% delle didattiche operanti in Italia, hanno sottoscritto l’accordo per la costituzione della “CONSULTA DELLE DIDATTICHE SUBACQUEE”.

E’ un accordo semplice, basato fondamentalmente sul reciproco rispetto e sulla reciproca fiducia, lascia piena autonomia ai sottoscrittori ma stabilisce un principio fondamentale:
Le parti decidono di collaborare sinergicamente tra di loro, sviluppando iniziative comuni, atte a tutelare i diritti della categoria a ogni livello, di fronte a qualsiasi autorità e con ogni modalità lecita e legale.
Un obiettivo ambizioso ma che ha già dato i suoi frutti in alcune situazioni d’interesse comune, come la collaborazione con il 2^ reparto del Comando centrale della Capitaneria di Porto e con il Comando di Cagliari per la modifica di alcune normative riguardanti l’attività subacquea. Ora sono in atto altre azioni che interessano la Regione Sicilia, il lago di Bracciano e la Capitaneria di Trieste, dove alcune ordinanze non facilitano lo svolgimento delle immersioni.

Quindi non una sigla nuova e magari vuota di contenuti ma uno strumento operativo a salvaguardia e difesa della nostra attività. Le sigle che partecipano alla Consulta sono:
ANDI, ANIS, ASI, CIRSS, DAN-EUROPE, ESA, FIAS, FIPSAS, FISA, HSA, ITALIA, IANTD, IDEA-EUROPE, PADI EUROPE, PSS WORLDWIDE, NADD, NASDS, SNSI, SSI-ITALIA, TDI/SDI ITALIA, UISP.

Nuovi computer per DAN Research - dive system

Nuovi computer per DAN Research

20 computer subacquei di nuova generazione sono stati donati al DAN Research dalla casa produttrice DiveSystem.

I nuovissimi Furyo e le relative interfacce verranno usati nei numerosi progetti di ricerca del DAN Research.
Questi computer si caratterizzano, in particolare, per l’algoritmo decompressivo Bühlmann ZH-L 16C implementato con Gradient Factor impostabili. Si tratta di un sistema che consente di variare, in funzione delle esigenze del subacqueo e delle condizioni di immersione, il conservativismo dell’algoritmo decompressivo secondo i Gradient Factor Hi e Low. Questo permette di effettuare le prime soste decompressive più in profondità, in conformità con i più recenti studi di medicina iperbarica, dei quali DAN Europe è protagonista assoluto.

Tra le ricerche per le quali verranno usati i computer, un lavoro condotto dal DSL (Diving Safety Laboratory) sulla produzione delle bolle gassose di azoto post-immersione in subacquei che usano sia aria compressa che nitrox.

I profili delle immersioni di migliaia di subacquei volontari che “donano” la loro immersione confluiscono in una grande base dati che il DAN utilizza nelle sue ricerche.

DAN ringrazia DiveSystem per il suo sostegno alla ricerca scientifica in immersione.

The "Good Samaritan Law" … across Europe.

A very interesting article, written by the lawyers of the DAN Legal Network.

One of the first safety rules in diving is: you should never dive alone. A dive buddy is a person you can share emotions and experiences with. A buddy makes it easier to pay attention to the basic rules to avoid possible risks. A popular saying among divers is: "your buddy is the most important thing that you take with you in the water." In case of emergency, in fact, being alone could be fatal!

On the other hand, one of the most common questions we receive from our members is: what if I voluntarily aid an injured or ill diver and, in an attempt to resuscitate him, cause him injury? Could I be sued for wrongdoing?

To answer these questions, we are now publishing a very interesting article, written by the lawyers of the DAN Legal Network. It is called the "Good Samaritan's Law” and it gives information on its application in several European countries.
