Malta, October 1st 2015 - "Drink enough water" is a message we've been reminded of since we were children. For divers, this message is all the more important, as research conducted by DAN revealed that good hydration can effectively reduce bubble formation and thus the risk of developing Decompression Sickness (DCS).
Last summer DAN embarked on a full-blown campaign aimed at driving this message home. Between July and September, our staff handed out free water bottles to a community of divers preparing for their dives at Ċirkewwa, a popular dive site in Northern Malta. They we collected the empty bottles with a plan in mind...
Danny, as we called the plastic bottle sculpture, was designed and handmade by Maltese artist Jennings Falzon, using the empty plastic bottles collected following the ‘More Water, Less Bubbles' campaign. Jennings also recycled metal, wood, green and transparent plastic bottles and finished off the statue with black paint. The sculpture was the perfect way to show that a bit of creativity can transform used and unwanted plastic bottles into a piece of art.
As a result, the closing event of the 2015 summer campaign encouraged the support of the Maltese Environment and Sustainability Minister Leo Brincat who unveiled the sustainable sculpture to a crowd of journalists from all newsrooms, including national TV, political stations and leading newspaper photographers.
The ‘More Water, Less Bubbles' campaign was organised with the cooperation of the Malta Tourism Authority, the Mellieħa council, Transport Malta, the Malta Police Force, Professional Diving School Association Malta (PDSA) and Jason Bartolo of Mr Snackman Kiosk in Ċirkewwa.
